After President Trump‘s tweet that his office will be “designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization“ and that “It‘s ANTIFA and the Radical Left“, the question of who could be behind the current US protests is at stake.

For weeks now people, media, and Trump‘s administration have been wondering and debating who is behind the BLM protests, how and why do they want to destabilize the USA.

Some say it’s foreign agitators, some say the Antifa and Marxists, George Soros, such as Rudy Giulinani:

Who exactly is behind these Antifa and radical left organizations? How do they work and who funds them?

Let’s start there;

What is the Antifa movement?

They are anti-fascist, in short Antifa. The movement first came to life in the 1920s and 1930s as a response to European fascists. And they still exist all around Europe, fighting fascist and racist ideas and actions. The modern American Antifa movement started in the 1980s as Anti-Racist Action. At the time, they were fighting neo-Nazi skinhead subcultures and Ku Klux Klan organizations.

Today, they are against neo-Nazis, Neo-fascism, white supremacists, and racism. Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Stanislav Vysotsky wrote that the Antifa are most often in small-scale groups “making a difference” in their local community, by locating the activities of fascist groups in their area and then act on them.

“These groups are rarely militant or violent. Most of them engage in commonly accepted forms of political activism”, he wrote for “The Conversation”.

Who is participating in the US protests?

As Trump says that left-wing anarchists are the organizers of the protests, his opponents and critics say that the right-wing groups are the ones that are inciting violence.

In a report published at ABC News, there are five distinct groups in which members were arrested during the protests. They are violent protesters, white nationalists, armed militias, the Boogaloo Bois, and Antifa.

All of these, except white nationalists, don’t have organization structure. They are just ad hoc local groups that react to events happening around them. And there not even many white nationalists seen at the protests, in comparison to their online community.

Some members of the Bogaloo Bois, who were armed military veterans, were arrested in Las Vegas while trying to cause chaos at protests just the day before Trump tweeted that Antifa is a terrorist organization.

Some people claim that the Boogaloo Bois are very similar to Antifa, but their initial standpoint is different. They get annoyed by police and government showing their authority, and they are majorly pro-gun.

The Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights made a map of paramilitary and other far-right actors making incidents at the protests. The Boogaloo Bois were connected to more than 40 of those incidents, but the Antifa weren’t connected to the single one incident.

Antifa Marxists and Democrats – is there coordinated unrest around the country?

There have been accusations that the leaders of BLM are anti-American Marxists who want to “destroy us (USA) from within”. And a part of the accusations is true if we take into consideration BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors’ statement in which she described herself and fellow co-founder, Alicia Garza, as “trained Marxists”.

As Marxists, they are being accused of wanting to destroy the nucleus of the family, of being anti-police, anti-capitalism, and anti-civil society as we know it. With that statement, it is only reasonable for people to believe that the protests truly ARE a way to destabilize the country.

Portland, Oregon is a place where you can see all the things people are discussing online. In that city, the BLM protests are almost regularly violent, and as a black police officer, Jakhary Jackson said that “any remaining peaceful BLM protesters are long gone. There are people who genuinely want positive change to happen and an end to violence in the street. But those people aren’t truly welcome in ANTIFA or BLM”.

In addition, the Democratic Party is “marching towards Socialism” and has a “Marxian economic agenda”, wrote Mark Hendrickson for Forbes. That is why the democrats aren’t doing a thing to stop the riots and chaos in Portland, as it is said in The Washington Times.

Portland is run by a Democrat, Edward Tevis Wheeler. Trump thought that democrats can’t or don’t want to stop the constant riots in the city, this is why he has sent national troops to “rescue” the city.

Even though the political beliefs of the Antifa are on the left, they do not agree with the Democratic Party platform. CNN states again that they don’t have a leader and headquarters.

Is there a link between Black Lives Matter and Nation of Islam?

Muslim Americans are mostly supporters of the BLM movement. In a joint statement against anti-black police violence, which was signed by 35 national organizations and 60 state organizations, they are naming the reasons for their support.

“Black people are often marginalized within the broader Muslim community. And when they fall victim to police violence, non-Black Muslims are too often silent”, it is written in the statement.

They are fighting with BLM for establishing a federal standard that use of force be reserved as a last resort, only when absolutely necessary, after exhausting all other reasonable options, the prohibition of maneuvers that restrict the flow of blood or oxygen to the brain, the prohibition of racial profiling, and requirement of robust data collection on police-community encounters and law enforcement activities, etc. All of their demands can be seen here.

However, some people see the “destroyers of the country” everywhere around them, which includes some of the Muslims as well.

There seems to be some connection between BLM and Nation of Islam, an organization with the “bizarre theology of innate black superiority over whites – a belief system vehemently and consistently rejected by mainstream Muslims”.

People who lead BLM in Los Angeles, Melina Abdullah and her daughter Thandiwe Abdullah, have a record of anti-Semitic statements

George Soros Open Society Foundation

George Soros has funded the Black Lives Matter organization. And not only that but his Open Society Foundation announced $220 million for building power in black communities.

“The largest share of this support—$150 million—will be through a set of five-year grants to Black-led justice organizations that helped to create and now sustain the momentum towards racial equality. Open Society’s response reflects our conviction that real progress requires sustained support over many years and letting leaders accountable to impacted communities shape the path forward.”

From the Open Society website

Soros support could be a soft power tactic and an influential strategy, as George Soros’ Open Society Foundation is known for supporting democratic and leftist organizations, and even the US Democratic Party.

Theories of George Soros orchestrating many protests around the world, causing chaos and unrest in many countries come from mostly right-wingers when there are fights initiated by left-wingers, who Soros’ foundation is funding. Many of those accusations and theories can be found (and explained) in the BBC’s article.

There are many conspiracy theories about George Soros (that he is a former Nazi, that he swore to “destroy the USA”, that he owns the Antifa and BLM…) and they are all debunked by some of the best fact-checkers in the world – Reuters fact-checkers.

Are BLM and the Antifa manipulated by … Russia or China?

With elections approaching, people are wondering if Russia is going to affect the outcome as it did in 2016. The New York Times showed in their report that the Russian government is making “efforts to inflame racial tensions in the United States as part of its bid to influence November’s presidential election, including trying to incite violence by white supremacist groups and to stoke anger among African-Americans, according to seven American officials briefed on recent intelligence”.

Russia’s primary goal is to nurture and evoke chaos in the USA and discourage Black voter turnout by influencing white supremacist groups to spread hate messages more aggressively, says the report.

A CNN report says that Russian trolls are making chaos through social media accounts, but they are better disguised and harder to identify and track this time.

They are outsourcing the accounts to African nations of Ghana and Nigeria, but this report says that they are promoting black empowerment. “The goal, according to experts who follow Russian disinformation campaigns, is to inflame divisions among Americans and provoke social unrest”, is written in the report.

NBC News connects China, Iran, and Russia in their attacks on the USA. Their goal is the same – unrest and chaos amongst American voters. Only, China and Iran are a little bit more focused on criticism of issues including them.

So, if there isn’t one organization that is behind the protests and if they are not well organized, are the American masses manipulated by Russian fake social media accounts made to artificially amplify George Floyd’s murder and catalyze it in civil unrest?

The BLM movement exists for seven years already, and during all of these years, the protests were, well, calmer than they are now. Millions of people protested for several years and somehow there are still black people being killed by the police only because they are black.

People want and need that kind of behavior to be criminalized, and police practices to be changed. But they are not. That is why some people think that it is time for violence because the country didn’t respond to any other kind of protest.

Trumps’ administration and his adherents see the protests as a form of an attack. On the other hand, the liberals think of protest as one more means of the fight for equality and maybe some more goals.

The protests can be seen as a fight between two ideologies – Republicans vs. Democrats, nationalists vs. mondialists, or capitalists vs. communists. But it actually isn’t that simple. Not all Democrats are communists, and not all Republicans are nationalists, etc.

Only, the divide between people is getting bigger and bigger, and the reason to blame is – as we have learned from the history – economic crisis.

Whenever a great economic crisis occurs, many people become unemployed, life standard decreases, and the overall dissatisfaction with the world increases. In Europe and in the USA there has been a rising political division between people who believe in different ways of leading the countries in these difficult times, accelerated by a global pandemic.

In most countries, the division isn’t between right and left oriented political parties, because the line between those two is most of the time invisible. With pandemic chaos, media chaos, and now political chaos, there are no longer left and right, only two sides which are increasing the division between people who are struggling for a better life.
